About the event

Greg Ruby Quartet • Swing Music, Dance and More at the Swedish Club • Aug. 8
Greg Ruby returns from NYC to the Seattle and will perform at the Swedish Club on Friday, August 8 at 7pm. Joining Ruby will be violinist Julian Smedley, bassist Geoff Cooke and rhythm guitarist Arnt Artsen. Suitable to listening and dancing alike, the quartet will perform a mélange of compositions by guitarist Django Reinhardt, timeless swing standards and original work by Ruby.

For over two decades, Greg Ruby called Seattle home before moving to NYC in 2019. While in the PNW, Ruby was a member of “that mighty engine of swing” Pearl Django, was a beloved band leader in the Seattle-area swing dance scene and released countless records – including “Syncopated Classic,” a project which unearthed, restored and recorded the nearly lost work of 1920’s Seattle jazz pioneer Frank D. Waldron and was awarded Earshot Jazz Magazine’s “Northwest Recording of the Year” in 2017.

Julian Smedley started his music career as a choirboy in an English cathedral. As a violinist he performed regularly on BBC television and radio both as a soloist and an orchestral player. He co-founded the Bowles Brothers Band that recorded on Decca Records. Since moving to the West Coast of the U.S., he has performed with such artists as Art Lande, Ralph Towner, Gary Peacock and Gil Evans, and he was a member of the Bay Area’s Hot Club of San Francisco. Since his 2011 return to the Pacific Northwest, Julian has been performing with The Debutones, Julian and Alison, a jazz duo with his wife and Bistro String Trio

Arnt Arntzen is a rhythm guitar specialist who has called New York City home since 2017. Recently, he returned to the Pacific Northwest and how resides in Tacoma. While in NYC, he played regularly with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, the Louis Armstrong Eternity Band at Birdland and has worked with the Jen Hodge All-Stars, Baby Soda Jazz Band, Gordon Webster Swing Band, Avalon Jazz Band, and Cait and the Critters.

Geoff Cooke’s bass playing is deeply rooted in traditional and modern jazz but is comfortable in nearly any style. He is also a sought-after bass luthier.

And for those who love do dance, the dance floor will be hopping with swing and balboa dances into the night. During the breaks, enjoy a cocktail and take a break on the balcony with a beautiful view of Lake Union.

Also, order a potato bar dinner in advance: Get ready to fall in love with one of Sweden’s most beloved culinary traditions: the Baked Potato Bar! A celebration of the humble spud, the Swedish potato bar is all about building your own perfect plate with hearty, homey toppings like creamy dill sauce, veggies, crispy onions, cheese, herring, and more.

Why is it so popular in Sweden? Because it’s delicious, affordable, and endlessly customizable—It’s comfort food with a Nordic twist, and we’re bringing it straight to you.

Toppings to Except:

Pickled delights (cucumbers, beets, red onions)
Fried shallots & crispy onions
Cheese, sour cream, herbed butters
Make it REAL Swedish: skagenröra or herring
Fresh herbs and sauces to top it all off

Whether you go classic or get creative, the Swedish potato bar is pure comfort—and pure fun. Come hungry. Leave happy. Smaka på det! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fridays-at-the-club-w-musical-guest-greg-ruby-quartet-tickets-1511130023579
