About the event

Charlie Cunningham, LŪKΛ, Halley Greg @ ST. MARK'S CATHEDRAL (Abbey Arts Presents)
Charlie Cunningham: www.charliecunningham.com
"Charlie Cunningham has emerged as a truly under-the-radar success story. Splitting his time between piano and nylon string guitar, Charlie’s melancholic yet rhythmically driven songs have seen him become a regular fixture in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls.

Despite his dyslexia making it near impossible for him to read music, Charlie earned a music degree and by his mid-20s worked a variety of odd jobs and wrote songs in his free time. Eventually, he moved to Seville, immersed himself in Flamenco music and focused intensely on his guitar playing. Planning to stay for 3 months, he stayed for 3 years. Once home, Charlie found work playing in bars across London and Oxford — eventually returning to songwriting. Charlie has subsequently released 3 albums and 4 eps which have garnered over half a billion streams.

His new album In Light offers a luminous blend of gently pulsating organic production, soaring melodies, and Cunningham’s signature masterful guitar work. The arrangements, understated yet dynamic, respond instinctively to his voice, weaving in unexpected key changes, moments of distortion, and atmospheric flourishes. Collaborators include Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno), who provided additional electric guitar parts, and drummer Liam Hutton, production and mix by Luke Smith (Keaton Henson, Foals, Everything Everything), and visual design by Gary Barber." - Artist Bio

"Patience for growth and the lush rewards that come with it. The difficulty of shedding former lives, while hanging on to the lessons and appreciation of the process. LUKA writes songs of, and for, healing. Music that both feels rooted in the natural world, as well as shimmers with blips of the technological. This balance and contrast creates a sonic environment that is both nostalgic and forward looking, worn in and brand new. With moments that feel intimate and contained and moments that feel like they're waiting on the collective for active participation. " - Artist Bio

Halley Greg: www.halleygregmusic.com
"Seattle singer-songwriter Halley Greg first rose to acclaim during the blind auditions on Season 20 of The Voice. John Legend called her slowed-down, piano ballad version of Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird” “poetic” and “beautifully crafted,” and the performance earned her a spot on Team Kelly. Her appearance on the show coincided with the release of her debut album, American Harlot, a feminist rebranding of the pop/rock albums of the early 2000s. Filled with distorted guitar solos and pithy pop vocal melodies, the album is an ode to angry women everywhere. The first line from the title track exemplifies Greg’s brand of sultry, cutthroat sass: “Welcome home dear / Take off your shoes / I’ll massage your feet and your ego, too.” American Harlot received acclaim from Seattle press and was featured on Talking Tracks, a podcast by Seattle music publication Dan’s Tunes.

While American Harlot mostly confines Greg’s anger to personal epithets, her sophomore release, recorded with Eric Lilavois at London Bridge Studios (Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band), is a critique and catharsis of America’s current political climate. Aptly called Straightjacket, the album takes on issues from gun rights to toxic masculinity. Greg’s pure and ethereal voice cuts through raucous guitar riffs, while her lyrics are so thick with social critique they’re almost punk. Think the clarity of Regina Spektor, the attitude of No Doubt, and the arrangements of Paramore." - Artist Bio
