Join Dorrin Wallace and Deana Driver for the launch of Flying a Gooney Bird in Canada's North: A Bush Pilot's Adventures (DriverWorks Ink).
This event will be held in the Travel Alcove and also available as a simultaneous YouTube stream.
For over 40 years, Dorrin Wallace flew unfamiliar airplanes on wheels, skis, or floats, carrying loads of fish or passengers in Canada’s North. He flew in an era when pilot training was rare and regulations were lax or nonexistent. His tales include adventures with fishermen, trappers, troublemakers, bootleggers, jokers, gifted or lucky pilots, and talented aircraft maintenance engineers in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. Retired journalist Deana J. Driver co-authored the book, adding to Dorrin’s engaging first-person anecdotes.
Dorrin Wallace grew up on the family farm near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, and began a career in aviation because of a Royal Canadian Air Flight Training scholarship. He worked as an aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) and a pilot for numerous companies, transporting freight and passengers into the bush and tundra of Canada’s North during a 40-year career in the aviation industry in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. He served as chief pilot at Norcanair and at Points North, and was the first president of the board of directors of the Saskatchewan Aviation Museum in Saskatoon, where he currently resides. He leads museum tour groups, sharing his industry knowledge and aviation adventure stories.
Author/editor/book publisher and retired journalist Deana J. Driver met Dorrin Wallace in 2019 while conducting interviews for what would become the first volume of her Flight: Stories of Canadian Aviation anthology series. In 2024, Dorrin and Deana began collaborating on his memoir as co-authors, with Deana adding to Dorrin’s captivating tales. Deana works from her home office in Emerald Park, Saskatchewan.
