About the event

Songs from the South: a cacophony of change around the Antarctic
Antarctica and the Southern Ocean lie at the heart of our global climate system. The Southern Ocean acts as a key regulator of global climate by connecting our oceans both horizontally and vertically; it is a place where ocean currents can transfer heat, carbon, and nutrients around the world and between the surface and the abyss. The Southern Ocean also plays a major role in determining the fate of the Antarctic ice sheet, which holds enough water to raise global sea levels by nearly 60 m. Dr Ed Doddridge’s lecture will focus on the role this rapidly changing region plays in determining the future state of our climate.
