About:
Michi – real name Michelle Guerrero – grew up as a dancer, before deciding music was her path in her mid-twenties. Michi’s debut album Dirty Talk packs a lifetime of experience into its ten songs, pairing a nostalgic sound with reflections on the modern forces preventing us from truly giving and receiving love.
Produced by Blake Rhein of Durand Jones & the Indications and Paul Cherry, Dirty Talk draws on the soul, ‘80s, and ‘90s R&B and Motown that have been in Michi’s blood since childhood. She grew up in Sun Valley, California, worshipping the R&B divas of the MTV era, and her adoptive parents introduced her to the likes of Stevie Wonder – one vivid childhood memory is of sitting in her car seat, listening to ‘My Cherie Amour’ and imagining a whole music video in her head.
Dirty Talk’s title came to Michi early: “I kind of talk my shit on this record,” she says. The empowering ‘Snoobie’ was written at a particularly raw time: “That was my moment after being dumped of being like, I'm pissed! It's crazy how men can have a hold over me sometimes. I used to say I hated them, but in fact I think I love them too much sometimes.” The flipside to Dirty Talk’s excavation of relationships is Michi’s celebration of love and confident sexuality.
Stones Throw labelmates join Michi on Dirty Talk’s most tender songs: Kiefer plays keys on ‘Way I Do’, a “rejection of optimism”, and Brazilian bossa nova artist Gabriel da Rosa features on “Memmy (Recuerdo)”. Last year, Knxwledge also remixed ‘Snoobie’, ‘There’s No Heaven’, and ‘If You Want Me’, turning the songs into bangers that speak to Michi’s dancer origins and her initial physical connection to music.
“I have carried so much pain in my heart from the way people have left my life, even since childhood,” Michi says. “I want this album to accompany whoever hears it in liberation of the self, in healing.” Dirty Talk isn't just about dishing out; “it's about revealing the dirt on my hands of misunderstanding life's gifts – the opportunity to transform, grow and release.”
