Cityscapes in Gouache will dive into the potential of gouache as a versatile plein air medium. Nathaniel will guide you through his approach to gouache painting on panel, from subject choice, composition, and thumbnailing, to value, atmospheric perspective, and color mixing. This intermediate class will focus on simplifying your subject matter and learning to work with gouache, whether you are coming from watercolor or oil.
Using photo references provided by Nathaniel, students will first create compositions with thumbnail sketches, then move to blocking in the painting, and lastly to a final pass of thick gouache paint. Through that proces, the class will cover atmospheric perspective, value, and color theory. Nathaniel will provide an instructional packet for students to take home and refer back to later. Students should leave the class with a working knowledge of gouache as a medium and the process of creating a painting, which they can then take into the field to paint from life.
Cost of admission includes a brush, gouache paints, a palette, spray bottle, and a wood panel. (A $50 value!)

About Nathaniel
Nathaniel J. Bice is a painter, theatrical scenic artist, and muralist whose works encourage the viewer to celebrate the beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a BFA in Performance Production in 2018, and has been living, working, exploring, and painting in the Bay Area ever since.
Nathaniel paints cityscapes of San Francisco and the Bay Area in gouache. He has shown in galleries around the Bay Area, such as an.ä.log gallery, Soft Times Gallery, STUDIO Gallery, the Falkirk Cultural Center, and Gearbox Gallery, and in other places such as The Studio Door in San Diego and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Maryland.
