Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science Press Release for December 7:
“What is Science” is the topic of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for December 7. Dr. Paul Bendt’s presentation will address the difficult questions raised by today’s misrepresentation of science by the media and politicians and its role in our lives.
In addition to addressing the question “What is Science?”, Dr. Bendt will speak to other issues about science. Is belief in science any different from belief in a religion? Being human, scientists make mistakes – should we believe them? Theories keep changing – why should we believe today’s version? If scientists can’t agree, why pay attention to what they say? The limitations of science and its importance will be part of the presentation.
Dr. Bendt grew up in Los Alamos, NM. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977 and PhD in Physics from University of Colorado in 1983. His interest is in developing computational methods for studying quantum physics. He has taught at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He currently runs Computer Mapping Company, where he specialized in computational techniques for analyzing geographic information. His interests include many fields of science, science education, and public policy.
Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science on the first Sunday of each month at A Church, 419 D Street, Salida, CO. Each presentation is informative and features a science topic that is understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. The doors open at 9:30 a. m. and the talk begins promptly at 10 a. m.
