In an on-going effort to raise awareness and promote action in relation to the maternal mortality epidemic that has plagued the U.S. for generations, St.Paul-Ramsey County Public Health’s Birth Equity Community Council will host a community screening of the award winning 2022 documentary, AFTERSHOCK ; directed and produced by Paula Eislet and Tonya Lewis Lee.
Following the preventable deaths of their loved ones due to childbirth complications, two families galvanize activists, birth-workers and physicians to reckon with one of the most pressing American crises of our time– the US maternal health crisis. The documentary follows the surviving family members and bereaved partners of Shamony Gibson andAmber Rose Issac as they become ardent activists in the maternal health space, seeking justice through legislation, medical accountability, community, and the power of art. Their work introduces us to a myriad of people including a growing brotherhood of surviving Black fathers, along with the work of midwives and physicians on the ground fighting for institutional reform. Through their collective journeys, we find ourselves on the front lines of the growing birth justice movement that is demanding systemic change within our medical system and government.
In addition to screening Aftershock and amplifying the national conversation around birth justice, this event will provide an opportunity for guests to learn about the birth justice movement happening in their own backyard, and what those on the frontlines need to permanently tip the scales in favor of Native American and Black birthing people in Minnesota. The stories of those holding healthcare systems in Minnesota accountable will be shared and celebrated via a community panel and intimate discussions. To cap off the event, guests will have the opportunity to unite around the Birth Equity Community Council’s strategic plan and workgroups- providing everyone with an opportunity to commit to continued action before wrapping the event.
This is a free event and dinner will be provided.
This event is open to the community at large! We encourage all who feel personally or professionally to this topics to attend.
