Why You (Yes, You) Should Join the YMCA Community Walk — A Totally True (ish) Tale of One Legendary Saturday
Once upon a sunny Saturday (forecast: 73 degrees with a 98% chance of fun), the Johnson family was deep in their weekend routine: Dad was napping with a TV remote on his chest, Mom was in a staring contest with the laundry pile, and the kids were locked into an epic sibling battle over who got the last toaster waffle.
Then, like a beam of motivation straight from the universe (or maybe a flyer from the fridge), Ellie Johnson stood tall and announced:
“We’re going to the YMCA Community Walk on Saturday, June 7th at 3pm!”
Dead silence.
Dad blinked.
Mom raised one eyebrow.
Even the family dog tilted his head like, "Excuse me?"
“But wait,” Ellie said, with the confidence of a motivational speaker crossed with a theme park mascot, “it’s not a race. You can stroll, meander, or dramatically saunter. There's no set distance. Just vibes.”
Then she brought out the big guns. Following the walk there will be Food trucks,Vendors, A family fun zone., AND a 5:30pm concert by the Letter Band with hits from the 80s, 90s, and today. All on the YMCA riverfront!
(Grandma Jean, who hadn't moved that fast since Y2K, was already digging out her lawn chair and bedazzled fanny pack.)
So off they went — the whole crew, plus some neighbors, a few skeptical in-laws, and one confused mailman who just tagged along.
They walked the beautiful riverfront at their own pace (which, for Dad, was “glacial but determined”), laughed a lot, made new friends, and discovered someone had brought a llama wearing sunglasses. (Again, no questions.)
And before the concert kicked off, they dropped off their non-perishable food donations at the Y’s collection site to support the Veteran Food Pantry — because walking together is powerful, but walking together and helping others? Now that’s what community looks like.
As the Letter Band played, families danced, tacos were devoured, and Grandma Jean led a spontaneous conga line to “U Can’t Touch This.” It was magical.

Moral of the story:
Grab your crew, your walking shoes, a canned good (or two), and your best 80s dance moves, and join us for the YMCA Community Walk — Saturday, June 7th at 3pm at the YMCA rotary pavilion.
It’s not a race. It’s a vibe. And you’re invited.
🎶 Food, fun, friends, and funky throwbacks.
🛒 Bonus points if you bring a non-perishable food item to support local veterans.
🪑 Don’t forget your lawn chair. Unless you plan to dance the whole time. In that case, stretch first.
