The World Groove Collective is an international jazz formation, led by Dutch alto saxophonist Tom van der Zaal and percussionist Steven Brezet.
The band consists of musicians with diverse cultural backgrounds and nationalities. The quintet combines jazz, rhythms from Africa and South America, and elements of world music, creating a dynamic and compelling sound that breathes the spirit of New York jazz clubs, but is steeped in global influences.
The diversity within the quintet, both in terms of cultural backgrounds and musical influences, makes their music groundbreaking and unique.
The different cultural perspectives come together in a sound that cannot be pinned down to one style or genre. In their work, the influence of African rhythms, South American and Brazilian grooves is clearly audible, while their roots in the American jazz tradition form a stable foundation.
The World Groove Collective explores the boundaries of contemporary jazz by bringing together a wide range of musical styles and traditions. New York jazz forms the backbone of their compositions and improvisations, but the quintet interweaves this with the rich rhythms of Africa and South America, where polyrhythms and syncopation are central.
This fusion of styles creates a sound that is deeply rooted in jazz tradition on the one hand, but is also enriched with influences from world music on the other. The band brings energetic performances in which each band member can excel, while at the same time a close musical dialogue is formed that produces a powerful collective sound.
From the high intensity solos to the rhythmic complexity of the percussion and drums, the quintet knows how to captivate their audience with dynamics and intensity.
