Unmaking My Chains Art Show

My show Unmaking My Chains opens First Friday October 3rd over at RoCo - since late August I have been participating in the COMP Studios residency program and I have had a wonderful experience working in the space at RoCo Upstairs ❤️ I am so excited to show you what I’ve been working on and I hope you’ll come to the opening next week Friday 10/3 6-9pm, or come visit me during open studio hours on Saturday 10/4 or 10/11 from 12pm-5pm 🖌️ I have a couple pieces still in progress and I’d love to hang out with you while I work!

Artist Statement
.
I am interested in what it means to live a liberated life: free of social conditioning, self and society imposed expectations, and personal behaviors that hinder growth. I draw inspiration from metacognition and meta-emotion, or awareness of how and why we think and feel. As a recovering alcoholic with a history of anxiety and depression, I am aware that my thoughts and feelings are at once valid windows into my inner life, and momentary constructions that can get me into trouble if left unexamined. In my mixed media studio practice, I shine light on the power of affect to both support and hinder relationships with one’s self and with others. Ink and pastel lighten and darken the page as if in conversation, seeking balance and resolution. While studying expressive arts therapy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, I was profoundly moved by Stephen K. Levine’s concept of Poiesis, or “knowing by making.” It is through making that I have been able to approach the truth about the chains that bind me in this world, and it is through making that I can begin to unmake them.
