__________
In Lone Dog Road, Kent brings together a rich tapestry of people from different races and cultures to tell a compelling road story of two young Lakota boys, ages 11 and 6, who are fleeing from a government agent who has been sent to take the younger boy to an Indian boarding school. Set during the summer of 1950, this seemingly simple story of a pursuit soon becomes a complex human drama of intersecting lives as the boys make their way through the stifling Dakota heat to the pipestone quarries of western Minnesota to replace their great-grandfather’s čhaŋnúŋpa, or sacred pipe, that was broken by the government agent. Alive with closely rendered characters, both Native and non-Native, who the boys meet along their journey, Lone Dog Road is at once an exploration of the hidden corners of the human heart and a moving study of the way the land shapes the people who live, love, dream, and die upon it.
Kent calls this story of braided lives "the culmination of 35 years of listening, learning, writing, and traveling. In many ways it contains everything I've learned about life and the human spirit." Unique in its multiple cultural points of view, yet universal in its embrace of our common humanity, Lone Dog Road is destined to take its place in the grand tradition of great American road novels.
