Wings in the Wild: A Guided Butterfly Hike

Location: The Miller Farmstead
Join Ranger Graham for an afternoon guided hike around the Miller Farmstead as you explore the vibrant world of butterflies! During this two-hour program, participants will learn about the ecological importance of butterflies, their roles as pollinators, and fascinating facts about their life cycles, behavior, and adaptations.
Together, you'll practice hands-on butterfly identification in the field, using both visual markers and host plant clues. Keep your eyes open! You will be on the lookout for several specialized and regionally significant species that call Roan Mountain home.
This walk will combine hiking, close observation, and active discussion. Participants are advised to wear good walking shoes, hats, and weather-appropriate clothing. Participants are encouraged to bring field guides, nature journals, cameras, and binoculars. Pro Tip: download Seek by iNaturalist for free on your phone for easy identification, photography, and species logging!
