HEKLA:
“Eerie, wailing sounds over distorted feedback drones… Vibrato-heavy harmonies chirrup and throb in agonisingly slow motion.”
The Guardian, Album of the Month
“Cinematic...carefully orchestrated...delicately explores unfamiliar territory with uncanny finesse.”
The Wire
Acclaimed Icelandic theremin musician Hekla returns with Turnar, her third album of devastatingly heavy, spectral soundscape-songwriting, entering a sublime paranormal plane of haunting dread. Wails with ghostly harmonics while distorted drones crash together in a stormy and blackened netherworld sea. Delicately places sonic artefacts about a desolate negative space, creating a dense inverse gravity.
Hekla Magnúsdóttir graduated from LHí with a BA in composition and then a MA in art teaching. She regularly has theremin workshops where she mixes graphic notation with theremin playing.
MARIA-CARMELA:
An improvised live coding choir performance. Maria-Carmela will perform an improvised set with guests and a laptop.
Maria-Carmela is a producer, composer and vocalist who graduated with a 4 year Bachelor of Music in 2017 and is currently working on her MA in composition at LHÍ. She has produced and composed music for VR, audiovisual projects, immersive installations, has lent her voice to film scores, commercials, choirs and compositions and most recently composed music for a short horror film written and directed by Katla Solnes. Finding intrigue in the boundaries between beauty and discomfort she often embraces tense and unsettling textures while maintaining a dreamlike quality.
Under the name MSEA, Maria-Carmela has released 4 albums, most recently ‘Our Daily Apocalypse Walk’ in the fall of 2022 which was selected as ‘Experimental Pop Album of the year’ by Vísir, won the Grapevine Music Award for ‘You should have heard this’ and was nominated for the Kraumur Awards. MSEA’s music has been described as nightmare pop, ethereal and moody with hints of Julee Cruise and a more demented Anohni. Sometimes unsettling or melancholic but always genre-bending.

MADONNA+CHILD:
Madonna + Child. Small demon sisters. Faces don't matter, they are both Madonna and both child. No one has any idea where or when they arrived, they were just suddenly here surrounded by mysterious secret and white demon rabbits. Madonna + Child are known for their alternative approach to music and performance. They sing about killing, cutting, death and sorrow under a hypnotic rhythm of strange-spooky-techno-computer-beats an a dark and mysterious piano.
