VALA Eastside, Devika Kapoor, and Vidya Mohan present a Golu Exhibit and Kolam Workshop on Sunday, September 28, 12-2 pm.
Kolam (Tamil: கோலம்) is a traditional South Indian art form featuring intricate geometric patterns drawn at home entrances. Made with rice flour, chalk, or stone powder, kolams serve both aesthetic and ecological purposes. Women create them daily as a spiritual ritual to welcome prosperity and honor deities like Lakshmi and Ganesha. Designs use grid-based dots (pullis) connected by lines and curves, requiring skill and memory passed down through generations. During festivals like Navarathri, Pongal, and Diwali, kolams become more elaborate. More than decoration, kolam symbolizes harmony, devotion, and gratitude—an everyday expression of beauty and cultural heritage.
Kolam is an exquisite blend of art, devotion, and ecological mindfulness—an everyday expression of gratitude and grace. Join us to learn more and try drawing one for yourself!
