Our first Solemn Evensong & Benediction of the Fall term is slated Sunday, September 28 at 4pm!
A pre-service organ recital starts at 3:30pm played by Jerrick Cavagnaro of Trinity Church, Boston.
As always, a festive reception follows the service. All are welcome.
Evensong is often considered the crown jewel of Anglican liturgy. At just under an hour, it is filled to the brim with glorious music sung by the S. Stephen's Schola Cantorum under the direction of L. Graham Schultz.
We will be celebrating the eve of a beloved feast at S. Stephen's, Saint Michael and All Angels, commonly called Michaelmas.
Music will include Magnificat & Nunc dimittis of Herbert Howells, written in 1950 for the vast St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Howells' biographer Christopher Palmer says that the work "towers above the rest," wherein the music "burns through the words' patina of familiarity into a dramatic and purposeful entity." The anthem will be a setting of the text Tibi, Christe, splendor, written for the feast of St. Michael & All Angles in the year 1581 by the most famous composer of the Spanish Renaissance, Tomás Luis de Victoria.
We are thrilled to welcome Jerrick Cavagnaro, organist of Trinity Church, Copley Square, for his debut performance of S. Stephen's. A graduate of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Jerrick recently took top prize in the American Guild of Organist's National Competition in Improvisation. His program will include Mendelssohn's Fourth Organ Sonata and an improvisation on the great Michaelmas hymn, Caelites plaudant.
