In late summer 2025 Gem was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Gem's cancer was found accidentally after battling pneumonia for over a month. During a chest x-ray, doctors found a 4 cm tumor crushing their wind pipe. Next week on 10.16 they will be going in for surgery to have their thyroid removed and doctors are concerned because of the size of the tumor and the proximity to their vocal cords, their voice may never be the same or it may be lost forever.
Those of you who know Gem well, know they sing all the time, every day. The night before their surgery, they will be hosting a very special karaoke night at The Black Sheep with the help of Ladda Nurv and WRIK on 10.15 from 9pm - Midnight in the event that they might not be able to sing again.
If you’ve ever sang with Gem or had to listen to them in the office, in the club or in the community they hope you will join them and sing along Wedensday Night.
There will be a $20 suggested donation at the door to help cover any unrealized costs related to surgery and recovery and anything remaining will go to Haus of Codec to cover the costs related to their absence during recovery. Folx who can attend in person are invited to give online. -
