Hororová klasika němé éry Fantom opery z roku 1925 vtahuje diváky do tísnivých katakomb pařížské Opery, kde se znetvořený geniální vrah Erik, v podání Lona Chaneyho, zamiluje a zmocní mladé pěvkyně Christine a dává průchod své žárlivosti i vražedné posedlosti.
Ikonická montáž stínů, napětí a hrůzy, podpořená velkolepým doprovodem klasické hudby, dodnes ohromuje temnou atmosférou a inovativní trikovou estetikou.
Fantom opery je prvním snímkem tohoto léta z výběru galerijního týmu, konkrétně kurátora Jána Gajduška.
„Fantoma opery jsem měl poprvé šanci vidět už jako puberťák na základní škole. K filmu jsem se tehdy dostal náhodou, protože němé filmy z 20. let tehdy rozhodně nebyly něčím, co bych náruživě vyhledával. Co mi ale dodnes z toho zážitku utkvělo, byla ta hutná hororová atmosféra, kterou film dokáže skvěle vybudovat jen s minimem výrazových prostředků a hrou s naší imaginací. K děsivě temné autenticitě někdy stačí jen zlověstné ticho, bledá maska Lona Chaneyho a stínohra podzemí pařížské opery..."

The Phantom of the Opera, a horror classic from the silent film era, is a haunting tale set in the grand, shadowy halls of the Paris Opera House. The film follows a mysterious, masked figure who lurks beneath the theater, driven by a dark obsession with a young singer named Christine. “I first had the chance to see The Phantom of the Opera as a teenager in elementary school. I came across the film by accident—silent films from the 1920s definitely weren’t something I actively sought out at the time. But what has stuck with me to this day is the film’s intense horror atmosphere, which it manages to build masterfully with minimal expressive tools and by playing on our imagination. Sometimes, all it takes for a chillingly dark authenticity is ominous silence, Lon Chaney’s pale mask, and the shadow play of the Paris Opera’s underground..."
