Soil Lead Testing Event at Portland Nursery on Division

Following the success of last month’s lead testing event at Stark, the Multnomah County Health Department will be offering a free screening of garden soil for the toxic heavy metal LEAD at our Division Street shop this August.

Many of Portland's older neighborhoods have high lead levels in soil near older homes because of past use and unsafe removal of exterior lead-based paint on housing. Lead in soil is a common exposure pathway for small children. The Multnomah County Health Department will test soil samples for lead with a 10-20 second X-ray analysis and provide information on how to safely manage lead in soil.

Participants can bring up to 3 separate soil samples from different locations in the yard. Each sample should be about 1/2 cup of dry, preferably sifted soil in a Ziplock bag labeled with the collection location. The Health Department's subject matter expert on lead poisoning prevention will be available to answer your questions.
