It's DJ Action Slacks's annual Women's History Month dance party reminding everyone that women actually DO matter (at least to most of us I think).
We'll celebrate women who made it through the gauntlet, past the gatekeepers long enough to make their voices heard. Whether they released dozens of records or just one, these women created the musical document of our experiences, thoughts, & feelings during the mid-20th Century.
Let's celebrate our endurance, perseverance, talents, creativity, humanity, and rebelliousness! Join me at the Kenton Club to dance to a variety of music made by women in the 1950s, 1960s, early 1970s - Familiar faves & rarities: Soul, Rock n Roll, Country, R&B, Latin, Pop, Camp, & more! Hear empowering tunes by icons like #NinaSimone, #BrendaLee, Aretha, Celia Cruz, Rose Maddox, Etta James, etc as well as lesser known talents who deserve more attention!
It's a great chance to dance off some of that frustration that's been piling up, while also expressing gratitude for our sisterhood.
"Respected LadyLand" alludes to a place where I think so many women would love to exist. It's a land where we're seen and believed, valued, treated with respect, compensated fairly without exploitation, free from intimidation or harassment, with autonomy over our bodies and minds. Maybe if we envision such a place perhaps more of us will feel compelled to mobilize to fight for it. Collective determination, focus, tenaciousness, persistence, ingenuity, bravery, and comradery are key. Community bonding can begin on the dance floor. I hope to see you there!
