The German Language Film Festival Ottawa (GLFFO) returns to Ottawa for its 15th edition, celebrating the diversity and depth of cinema from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and we invite you to experience it with us!
Austria’s contribution, “Gina” by Ulrike Kofler, screens on May 14th at 6:30pm and is nominated for three Austrian Film Awards in 2025.
Synopsis:
Nine-year-old Gina yearns for the warmth of a real family, but her mother Gitte is struggling to cope with the demands of single parenthood and an impending fourth child. Seeking refuge in excessive parties and alcohol, Gitte risks losing the one thing that keeps her going: her children. As Gina fights against the backdrop of generational poverty, neglect, and lovelessness, she refuses to accept that her fate is predetermined by her birthplace. This is a three-generation family portrait told through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, who is determined to break the cycle and find stability and hope amidst the challenges of her upbringing.
On May 7 the festival kicks off with Germany’s “From Hilde, with love”, a stirring biopic of resistance fighter Hilde Coppi, who stood up to the Nazi regime, and on May 21, Switzerland brings some levity with “Golden Years”, a charming and witty comedy about a retired couple discovering unexpected freedom – and themselves – while cruising into a new chapter of life.
