Being with Birds

Join us for a serene and mindful experience at The ONE Center on Steamboat Island, where we blend the art of birding with the practice of mindfulness. Whether you're an experienced birder or new to both birding and mindfulness, this class offers a unique opportunity for relaxation, learning,and personal growth. When we tune into the birds, we learn a lot about what's happening within ourselves and all around us. Birds’ calls and behaviors can indicate changes in weather, the presence of predators, and the health of the ecosystem. Paying attention to these natural cues can enhance our self awareness,understanding, and connection to nature. In "Being with Birds," we invite you to immerse yourself in the natural world through a blend of birding and mindfulness. This is mindfulness in nature! During this experience, you'll learn practices like sit spotting from the practice of Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing), and learn tips for bird identification through your senses of sight and sound. Together, we'll practice slowing down, pausing and resting in nature to discover simple ways to Be with Birds and connect with the more than human world by the beautiful South Salish Sea and in the forest too. Bring a notebook to write down your thoughts and learnings, and clothing appropriate for sitting outside, and binoculars if you have them - they are not required for bird sits. Sit pads and chairs provided. Rain or shine, we'll practice mindfulness in nature together. We hope you come to discover the pleasure of Being with Birds to feel more connected to yourself, others, and the natural world too.
