History & Evolution of the YOGA WALL
This method of practice is based on BKS Iyengar’s principles of alignment. The wall, (yes the actual wall) is fit with special hookups and harnesses that are used as props to empower students to discover greater alignment, strength, stability, and freedom in the asana. The spaciousness created by use of these props grows accessibility, understanding, and confidence in the practice.
The original “Yoga Wall” took on the form of ropes attached to wall hooks, The current day Yoga Wall evolved from Iyengar’s approach, and contributed adjustable straps and bars. These updates made the therapeutic benefits of this practice even more accessible to the students who come to class with a variety of capabilities and flexibilities.
Benefits of the YOGA WALL
Gravity is a natural resistance, and the wall takes advantage of that for strength building. Gravity is also a decompression energy that can support the alleviation of back and neck pain, as well as safely elongate muscles.
The YOGA WALL:
- Supports students in working toward greater understanding and awareness of their body
- Alleviates fear of postures
- Empowers confidence in ability
- Builds strength in both large and small muscle groups
- Permits access to postures not yet accessible with only a mat
- Offers therapeutic benefits to individuals with athletic injuries, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica (and more)
- Allows for greater overall awareness
- Provides new perspectives in all categories of posture: standing, forward and back bends, twists, axial extensions, and inversions
- Balances our physical energies leaving the student feeling more present and relaxed in their body.
In this class students will be in standing postures most of the time. Inversions will be taught safely with lots of variations and preparatory postures. Students will have options and be empowered to choose the variation that meets their bodies needs and abilities.
This class is appropriate for all levels of practice including 1st time students and beginners.
