Hirundo Wildlife Refuge
1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town, United States
Join us for a serene Full Moon Walk as we explore the trails under the glow of the moonlight. Experience the peaceful beauty of the forest at night, listen for nocturnal sounds, and connect with nature in a whole new way. Learn about Maine's nocturnal wildlife and their adaptations as we hike along. We will finish up with snacks and moon viewing with telescopes.
Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a magical evening outdoors, this guided hike is perfect for all ages. Bring your sense of adventure and wonder as we immerse ourselves in the natural world after dark!
* This event is limited to ages 8+ due to the temperature, trail conditions/lack of lighting and slightly slower pace of the event
Additional Event information:
Location: 1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town Maine - Hirundo Gate 1, Pine Parking Area, Parker Reed Shelter (MAPS BELOW FOR REFERENCE)
How to prepare:
Layers, good hiking shoes, a water bottle, and a flashlight or headlight are all encouraged.
*Be prepared to walk in limited lighting, we will mainly try to use our night vision first so we do not scare off the wildlife and will allow us to see the sky easily. If you bring a flashlight please cover it in a thin layer of red fabric or plastic. The red light allows us humans to see, but most wildlife can’t see the red and it will not harm their vision as heavily. Many headlamps have a red light feature as well!
Distance & Trail Conditions:
We will hike about 1.5 - 2 miles total. The trails are uneven, rocky, and rooted. There is very little elevation change, with 90% of all possible trail routes being completely flat.
Bathrooms:
There is an outhouse available year round. It is ADA accessible, with a long low grade ramp. There is no running water. (Images below)
Directions:
From the South – Take the I-95 N to ME-43 exit 197 to Old Town/Hudson. Turn left onto Rt. 43 (Hudson Rd). Go west 4.75 mi and look for the large red sign on your right. Turn into Gate 1 and follow the dirt road for ~1/2 mile to the Pine Tree parking area. (MAPS BELOW)
