1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town, United States
Join us for a look at one of the top nocturnal predators! Learn how owls navigate the dark and sneak-up on their prey, and discover whooo is making that sound in the dark. While we learn we will be making s'mores by the fire. We will then take a look at what is an owl pellet and why owls make them. Then as the sun sets we will go out on the trail for a look at the night life and search for our feathered friends!
Location: 1107 West Old Town Road, Old Town Maine - Hirundo Gate 1, Pine Parking Area and Parker Reed Shelter (MAPS BELOW)
*This program is ages 8+
Event information:
How to prepare:
Wear layers, bring a water bottle, and a headlamp or flashlight.
*Be prepared to walk in limited lighting, we will mainly try to use our night vision first so we do not scare off the wildlife. If you bring a flashlight please cover it in a thin layer of red fabric or plastic. The red light allows us humans to see, but most wildlife can’t see the red and it will not harm their vision as heavily.
Event/Trail Conditions:
This event will begin indoors but will transition to a hike outdoors in the dark. We will hike about 1.5 miles total. The trails are uneven, rocky, and rooted. They may become slippery if there is rain or snow. The trail has little to no elevation changes along the way. We will spend time outside the Parker Reed Shelter and possibly inside it, see the video images below for more on that space and what it looks like. This fire pit area is half large gravel and half grass, often this area gets covered with snow.
Bathrooms:
There will be an outhouse available. This outhouse is ADA accessible. There are no lights or running water in this outhouse.
