Join the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center for a special documentary screening and an intimate conversation with civil rights attorney John Burris, filmmaker Doug Harris, and others.

John Burris: Godfather of Police Litigation is an impactful documentary that tells the story of one man’s crusade and the challenges he has faced to bring justice to victims of police misconduct and brutality around the country.
John Burris, the Godfather, has devoted over thirty years of his accomplished life as a civil rights attorney to pioneer a field of law that has helped to create positive change within our society. Some of John Burris’ seminal cases involved video recordings of blatant police brutality starting with the 1991 Rodney King case against the Los Angeles Police Department. Burris’ 2009 Oscar Grant case against the BART police case in Oakland was the first known use of cell phone video recordings that documented a live police killing. Community protests centered around the case birthed the national Black Lives Matter movement. His 2015 Mario Woods case against the San Francisco Police Department’s brutal killing spearheaded San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel in protest during the national anthem of NFL games.
