Confound and Destroy
We’re thrilled to invite you to an engaging FREE talk at the Museum about the intriguing, secretive electronic warfare operations of the World War II Norfolk-based RAF 100 Group.
Meet John Allan in the ‘Friendship’ Tearoom on Sunday, 11 May, at 11 a.m. - no reservations necessary! Standard Museum admission charges apply.
During the talk, Mike Hillier from ‘The RAF 100 Group Association’ will launch and distribute free copies of their ‘RAF 100 (Bomber Support) Group Trail leaflet’. The leaflet guides an 81-mile car journey through Norfolk, visiting the 10 RAF 100 Group Stations. It makes for a fantastic day out.
No. 100 (Bomber Support) Group was a specialised unit within RAF Bomber Command, established on 11 November 1943. Its purpose was to consolidate the increasingly complex tasks of electronic warfare and countermeasures into one organisation. The group focused on developing and conducting operations with electronic warfare and countermeasures equipment from ten RAF stations located in Norfolk.
From 1944 to 1945, 100 Group Mosquitos claimed 258 Luftwaffe aircraft shot down while suffering 70 losses themselves. The growing threat posed by the RAF fighters led to what Luftwaffe crews called “Moskito Panik,” as the night fighter crews could never be sure when or where they might come under attack from the aggressive 100 Group fighters.
RAF 100 Group employed a range of specialised electronic jamming devices to disrupt German radio communications and radar systems, with over 32 devices tested and used by 100 Group. During bombing missions, specially equipped aircraft from 100 Group would fly in the main bomber stream.
