Community Planting Day - Te Herenga Waka o Orewa

Restore Hibiscus and Bays is working with Te Herega Waka o Orewa to restore the marae grounds, river bank and clean up the awa.

The removal of the derelict Wakatū tug boat in late 2024 churned up a section of river bank and left it bare of vegetation. It also exposed inorganic debris. Working bees, supported by Sea Cleaners have removed a lot of debris, but there is still much to do.

At our planting day, we will be planting oioi along this section of the riverbank, just above the high tide mark, to help to stabilise the riverbank. We’ll need to cut lengths of number 8 wire to create anchoring loops to hold the oioi in place to protect against fast-moving water in the event of heavy rainfall in the near future. We will also be transplanting sea primrose from the riverbank a little further along into the area landward of the oioi.

Plus, there is more clean up of the river to do. And if there is time, we can give last year’s planting some care, and deal with ecological weeds.

What to bring: Gardening gloves, water bottle, snacks, sturdy shoes/boots. Dress for the weather. Please bring a clean spade if you have one.
