Come to Fairhill for Guardians of the Green, a celebration of conservation, education, and outreach by botanic gardens โ the โzoos for plantsโ. Rare and threatened species can be safeguarded for future generations, while society learns, connects, and takes action for nature. Thereโs even a Treasure Hunt through the rainforest walks, gardens, and Forest Fairy Trail for all ages to enjoy.
Discover Fairhillโs โBig 5 Plantsโ โ five native species with powerful stories to tell.
We hope Guardians of the Green will deepen understanding of how botanic gardens help combat biodiversity loss and inspire stronger support for nature. Because protecting plants means protecting our future.
Five standout native plants tell rich stories of beauty, resilience, and purpose:
๐ฟ Banksia integrifolia (Coast Banksia) graces coastal landscapes with golden flower spikes, nourishing birds, bees, and possums โ once known as โhoneysuckleโ by early settlers for its sweet nectar.
๐ฅ Xanthorrhoea johnsonii (Grass Tree), with its dramatic form and ancient lineage, is a symbol of survival and renewal โ thriving through fire and drought for thousands of years.
๐ Corymbia citriodora โLemon Essenceโ, the dwarf flowering lemon-scented gum, produces elegant white blooms and a fresh citrus fragrance that delights pollinators and gardeners alike.
๐ฆ Leptospermum liversedgeii, affectionately known as the Mozzie Blocker, releases aromatic oils that naturally repel mosquitoes while supporting native insects and pollinators.
๐ธ Orthosiphon aristatus (Catโs Whiskers), with its delicate, whisker-like blooms, is beloved by bees and butterflies and valued in bush medicine for its gentle healing properties โ found blooming throughout Fairhillโs Botanical Gardens.
Together, these five plants embody the essence of subtropical living โ beautiful, beneficial, and deeply connected to place.
