Farewell To Hughes's is Brendan Gleeson's ode to a Dublin music pub, which closed its doors in 2021. The documentary—filmed over five days in January 2022 in and around the pub—records and interviews various musicians, dancers and singers as they gather one last time to revisit the magic, with archival footage inserted throughout to tell the story of Hughes's contribution to both the traditional music community in Dublin and the city as a whole.
Farewell to Hughes's was selected not only for its artistic merit, but for its profound resonance with the spirit of European cultural dialogue. This film, captures the emotional undercurrents of migration, memory, and identity—universal themes that transcend borders.
In the context of EUNIC’s mission to foster intercultural exchange, Farewell to Hughes's offers a cinematic lens into the personal costs of displacement and the fragile beauty of human connection. It reminds us that Europe’s story is not just written in treaties and institutions, but in the lives of those who leave, return, and remember. An unassuming pub on a side street behind the Four Courts in Dublin City Centre Hughes was a mecca of traditional Irish music for musicians, dancers, singers and listeners for over 35 years.
