ORIGINAL SCRIPT WORKSHOPS:
STAGED READING 7PM WEDNESDAY 2 JULY
Clay Knots by Leanne Guihot-Balcombe
Directed by Brian Joyce
NTC audiences are invited, at no cost, to attend the staged reading of Leanne Guihot-Balcombe’s new play.
The original script workshop’s purpose is to seek feedback from audiences to further develop the playwright’s script. A survey will open at the completion of the evening for comments and suggestions for the playwright to consider.
**It is important to note that the staged reading will not be a full production so cast may have scripts in hand, no costumes and minimal set and props.**
The workshop series are also designed to give an opportunity to local playwrights who have participated in the feedback sessions and who have scripts ready, to potentially be turned into a full production via our NTC: Originals Scripts program
ABOUT THE SCRIPT:
Clay Knots’ is the story of Frances Goshen, a troubled young woman in her mid-thirties who is on the run. She has become a reluctant traveller, compelled to drive into the interior of Australia, and she finds answers in a most unexpected place.
In the first act we see her arrive in Coober Pedy, an outback town founded on the mining of opals. Frances is searching for something, but even she is unsure of what that is. We are slowly drip-fed what it is she is running from, and as she begins to let her guard down, particularly with Vi, the owner of the Violet Grove hotel, we begin to understand the magnitude of past events.
The second act explores her immersion into the town and the townspeople who are surprisingly attracted to her and her artistic nature (by the way of art classes she runs). We watch as relationships develop, and bear witness as the truth surrounding the lives of her new friends begins to emerge.
This play touches on indigenous culture, mental health issues, love, and the idea that Art can bring a community together and even be the catalyst for healing
