About the event

Pippin Auditions
Pippin - Music & Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Book by Roger O. Hirson
Directed by Hilary Goldman
Musical Direction: Ethan Smith-Cohen, Choreographer: Alicia Kee

Synopsis: As told by a traveling troupe of actors led by the cunning and charming Leading Player, Pippin is the story of a young prince, heir to the throne, who is searching for his own “corner of the sky.” Pippin returns from university certain that he will find a fulfilling purpose in life. As encouraged by the Leading Player, Pippin dabbles in bloody battle, licentious and lusty sexual entanglements, and savvy political maneuvers, only to discover that true happiness is more complicated than he thought. With infectious tunes by Stephen Schwartz and classic choreography from Bob Fosse, Pippin is both a humorous allegory about growing up and a dark tale of the danger of false appearances and empty promises.

Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this updated version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Leading Player: Any gender, Age range: 20-50. The ultimate 'ring leader.' Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is a chameleon of sorts. Guides Pippin through his own story and tries to intervene at the end. excellent dancer. Obsessed with putting on a great show for the audience. Role ideally requires a strong sense of physicality and movement.

Pippin: Tenor, Age range: 17-35. Our story's young and confused protagonist. He is longing to find his purpose in life. Naive, innocent, and discontent. Eventually finds love, and meaning with Catherine and Theo.

Charlemagne: Baritone, Age range: 30 - 65. Pippin's demanding father. As the King of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne is more comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. He wears his years with great pride.

Fastrada: Mezzo-Soprano, Age Range: 30 - 55, Pippin's conniving stepmother. A seductress, who is no stranger to deceit and betrayal, she is both sexy and smart. Skilled at using her sexual appeal to benefit her and her Son. Strong dancer a plus.

Lewis: Charlemagne and Fastrada’s son. Strong and not bright. Pippin’s halfbrother and after Pippin, heir to the throne. Addicted to the physical, Lewis loves weight lifting, Lewis loves wrestling, but most of all, Lewis loves Lewis.

Berthe: Alto, Age range: 40 - 75. Pippin's saucy grandmother. A brassy woman full of wisdom, grace, and sass. She tries to help Pippin and encourages him to live his life to the fullest. Dance: Not required (but is a plus!)

Catherine: Mezzo-Soprano, Age range: 25 - 45. A widow and mother. She is a beautiful and hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful elegance. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point and eventually falls in love with him.

Theo: Age range: 9 - 16. Catherine's son, featured spoken role with solo at end.

Ensemble: The ensemble plays a vital role in bringing the story to life. They serve as a collective presence that supports and enhances the narrative, representing various characters, settings, and elements within the show. They create the world of Pippin, contribute to the overall storytelling, and provide a vibrant backdrop that highlights the journey and themes of the show. The ensemble plays many parts including: Charlemagne's Army, Monks, Nobility, Peasants, and The Players with opportunities for expansion. Acrobatics are not required, but dancing ability a plus.

The Heights Players is located at 26 Willow Place, between State and Joralemon Streets in Brooklyn Heights. The Heights Players is a membership organization. There is no pay or stipend for any role or position. There is a $20 membership fee if cast.
