This July Lincoln Center will showcase Brazil’s most vibrant artistry and cultural traditions with concerts and programs spanning July 16-20. As a part of their Summer for the City festival Brazil Week showcases the country’s diversity depth and creative excellence.
The week will offer select performances at Lincoln Center’s Family Storytime Comedy Underground and Jazz Underground series as well as Brasil Summerfest presenting an astonishing roster of brasileiros ao vivo e pessoalmente. There’s something for everyone to enjoy all for free!

Lincoln Center’s free Storytime programming returns at Summer for the City—and due to continued popular demand we have scheduled two readings every Wednesday! Curated by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts—which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year—Storytime events feature a children's book reading accompanied by live music dance or theater engaging kids of all ages. As part of Summer for the City’s Brazil Week the Library for the Performing Arts has invited Brazilian dancer Ingrid Silva to read her children’s book A bailarina que pintava suas sapatilhas or The Ballerina Who Painted Her Ballet Shoes. The book tells the story of Silva’s journey in ballet from her childhood in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro to her experience at the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York when she became a leading dancer and known worldwide. Silva tells how she faced racial and social prejudice and inspires children to discover themselves through her journey showing that dance is for everyone. Join us for this inspirational Storytime! Gafieira Rio Miami is a dynamic Brazilian big band made up of 11 talented musicians from Venezuela Cuba Brazil and the United States reflecting South Florida's rich cultural tapestry. Founded by native Brazilian and Latin GRAMMY winner Diogo Brown Gafieira Rio Miami breathes new life into samba de gafieira partner dancing a lively tradition that flourished in Brazil during the 1940s and '50s. Originating in Rio de Janeiro gafieira dance halls were hubs of creativity where waltz jazz soul tango and samba rhythms merged to create a unique expressive sound that defied social conventions and invited creative movement. As Brown shows gafieira embraces a range of genres such as chorinho pagode and maxixe. The group’s repertoire includes gorgeous arrangements of classics by Gilberto Gil Djavan Alcione Wilson das Neves Moacir Santos and many more. Seven-time Latin GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter Lenine is one of Brazil’s most iconic musicians. A native of Recife who later moved to Rio de Janeiro Lenine considers himself a “Brazilian of the world” absorbing musical and cultural influences from around the globe then integrating them into his phenomenally popular compositions. Over 35 years as a performer and more than a dozen albums Lenine has heard his songs recorded by Milton Nascimento Gilberto Gil Ney Matogrosso and many others. He is a much in-demand producer and arranger who has scored soundtracks for television movies plays and dance performances notably those of the renowned Grupo Corpo. Lenine has performed live at Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Festival The Montreal Film Festival and Lincoln Center's own globalFEST. For this year's Brazil Week Lenine will take the stage at Damrosch Park for an intimate concert with his trio featuring Bruno Giorgi and Pantico Rocha to play a career-spanning set of hits. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to present a selection of works from the permanent collection of the Instituto Museu Itamar Assumpção (MU.ITA) as part of Summer for the City's Brazil Week. Founded in 2020 MU.ITA is a private non-profit museum dedicated to the life and work of artist Itamar Assumpção a prominent voice in Brazil's cultural movement 'Vanguarda Paulistana'. With a collection of more than 4000 works—including paintings music photographs texts videos and costumes from Assumpção's personal archives—MU.ITA is the first virtual museum of a black Brazilian artist and the first to be translated into Yoruba the native language of Niger-Congo with the aim of bringing Itamar’s life and work closer to his African ancestry. This summer from July 16–30 the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts will host Sixth Sense a two-venue exhibition platform featuring selected literary musical and visual productions by Itamar Assumpção. In conjunction with Sixth Sense a video installation by multidisciplinary artist biarritzzz will be presented in the David Rubenstein Atrium from July 16–20. The Bahia-born and North Carolina-based vocalist and instrumentalist Caique Vidal joins us with his band Batuque for a concert of Afro-Brazilian samba as part of Lincoln Center's ongoing Brazil Week celebration. “Batuque” (pronounced ba-TOO-kee) means "to drum" and that imperative is delivered with an explosive performance that rocks the crowd! A community organizer for the Brazilian diaspora Vidal began his journey on the streets of Salvador da Bahia known as “the Black Rome of the Americas”. Playing with Olodum the founding family of samba-reggae Vidal has presented the genre’s infectious rhythms and message of empowerment across Brazil Europe and the United States. A studied rhythmic and choral arranger Caique Vidal has shared the stage with musical ambassadors including Susana Baca Carlinhos Brown and Gilberto Gil. His most recent album 2023's Save My Heart unites the sounds and spirit of reggae salsa pop rock samba and bossa nova into a riveting dance groove. Though initially only rarely heard outside of Brazil Os Mutantes is currently acknowledged as among the most dynamic original radical and influential bands of their era. These brash musical experimentalists engaged distortion feedback sampling techniques and a prescient selection of studio tricks to create a lighthearted playful yet still extreme Brazilian pop. An integral part of the psychedelic Tropicália and protest movements Os Mutantes combined unbridled guitars traditional rhythms an optimistic vision of the future and an advanced melodic sensibility. Now nearly 60 years removed from their founding Os Mutantes’s approach to sonic collage and a wry tendency toward cultural irony ushered in a near-universal modern music aesthetic. Roda de Choro with Regional Samaúma

Meet up with the New York-based Brazilian choro and samba ensemble Regional Samaúma for a celebration of the sounds of Brazil through the potent group music-making gathering known as a Roda de Choro! Choro references a rich repertoire that dates back nearly two centuries and represents the fusion of Afro-Brazilian traditions with classical sonorities and dance forms from European culture. Initially developed in the post-slavery Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s choro remains a fundamental driving force for the contemporary expression of Brazilian culture. Engaged in various facets of choro you may hear Regional Samaúma soloing with a Symphonic Orchestra playing collaborative chamber music leading their weekly choro performances or classes or playing and singing samba. The group features Fernanda Silveira on the cavaquinho 4-string guitar Vitor Sampaio on the Brazilian 7-string guitar and Fabio Oliveira on percussion with a rotating cast of some of NYC's finest soloists. For this Summer for the City event Regional Samaúma presents a two-part Roda de Choro beginning with a historical journey across 150 years of choro styles incorporating maxixe Brazilian polka and tango samba lundu and baião. In honor of this year's Brazil Week a trio of young South American stars headline a three-set blockbuster Lincoln Center debut concert at Damrosch Park. Over five studio albums hundreds of live shows and more than 400 million streams across digital platforms the São Paulo-based rapper Rashid has earned the crown of one of the leading voices in Brazilian rap. His most recent LP 2024's Portal finds the emcee paying respect to the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. Tulipa Ruiz a Brazilian singer-songwriter is known for her powerful voice and moving lyrics. A Latin GRAMMY winner for Dancê (2015) she was nominated again in 2024 for "Habilidades Extraordinárias" and the song "Baby 95." Blending tropicália rock and electro-pop Tulipa is a desired collaborator having worked with artists like Elza Soares João Donato Emicida and Adán Jodorowsky. Melly began singing at age six and at just 23 has emerged as a standout voice in Brazilian music blending American R&B with her Afro-Bahian roots. She gained recognition with the EP Azul (2021) a performance at Afropunk Bahia and a Best New Artist win at the 2023 Prêmio Multishow. In 2024 she released her debut album Amaríssima featuring collaborations with Liniker and Russo Passapusso earning nominations for the Latin GRAMMY Prêmio Multishow (MPB of the Year) and WME Awards where she won in the Songwriter category. All three of these artists have worked together on past projects so you can expect some special guests at each set! Conceived in collaboration with Janete Da Silva founder of the Silva Dance Company this panel discussion highlights how Brazilian artists are reshaping ballet’s future exploring the role of identity in shaping a dancer’s career. Moderated by the Executive Director of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Roberta Pereira the confirmed panelists for this talk will include Brazilian-born Nayara Lopes currently a principal dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet; Ingrid Silva founder of the arts equity organization EmpowHer NY and originally from Rio de Janeiro; and Dylan Santos an eleven-year veteran with Dance Theatre of Harlem and on Broadway in the smash-hit The Lion King. Brazilian singer-songwriter Anelis Assumpção's father Itamar was a meaningful figure in the history-making São Paolo DIY movement Vanguarda Paulistanta. She has followed in his footsteps channeling the socially critical intellectually liberal and culturally diverse perspectives of that tradition into her work. Assumpção's music is a lively blend of jazz funk prog rock dub reggae samba and pop all held aloft by her sinewy melodic voice. Assumpção's art synthesizes the ancestry of the Afro-Brazilian people presenting their authentic experience through words and rhythms. She has released four albums a children's book and numerous singles and noteworthy collaborations establishing herself as one of the most important artists of her generation. She also serves as the director of MU.ITA—the Itamar Assumpção Museum—which will present an exhibit at the David Rubenstein Atrium and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts celebrating Itamar’s memory and showcasing his rich legacy to the New York audience. Born in the countryside of São Paulo the bold and groundbreaking superstar singer-songwriter Liniker is proving that you don't have to choose between changing the world or charting hits. Honored as an "Immortal" by the Brazilian Academy of Culture cast in a star role in the Amazon Prime Video series Manhãs de Setembro and winner of the Latin GRAMMY for Best Portuguese Language Popular Music Album (making her the first transgender artist to ever win a Latin GRAMMY) Liniker's resume speaks for itself. Liniker originally made her mark on the Brazilian music scene as the bandleader of Liniker e os Caramelows singing a fusion of samba pop soul jazz dub reggae R&B and cabaret torch songs. Her sophomore solo LP 2024's CAJU was a major winner at the 2024 Multishow Awards deemed by the culture journal escutai to be "diverse dynamic plural orchestral psychedelic... a mix of the many parts of the grand whole that is Liniker."
