🎤 Speaker: Professor Ian Heller

Join us for a fascinating discussion as Professor Ian Heller unpacks the concept of deviance and its implications in our society. While the term often carries a negative connotation, to social scientists, deviance is a neutral categorization of behaviors deemed non-normative by social norms.

Delve into the theories that illustrate how deviant behavior is socially constructed and why this understanding is crucial. Professor Heller will explore diverse topics—from the evolution of smoking norms to the changing perceptions of cannabis—as well as examining cases of deviance in various contexts, including obesity, male cheerleaders, and social shaming.

Ian Heller teaches law at John Jay College, sociology at City College, and criminal justice at Pace University. He has a rich background as a civil and criminal litigator and is a former CEO managing talent in media. Beyond academics, he is a musician and former radio host, and he even played 1864 rules Base Ball for the Hoboken Nine!
