The Magic of Medicine asks the question “what is the difference between a potion and a prescription” and explores how this difference, or similarity, elucidates the lived experience in New Orleans at the turn of the 19th century. Starting at the home of America’s first licensed pharmacist Louis Dufilho Jr.

This tour explores the practices and prescriptions before the dawn of germ theory and modern medicine. The second half of the tour sets out into the historic French Quarter to walk in the streets familiar to the city’s most famous herbalist, Marie Laveau. Stops include the alleged birth place of the cocktail, St. Louis Cathedral, and Jackson Square. Immerse yourself in the history of pharmacy and the French Quarter.
