2025 JONB Celebration - AAHCC Juneteenth Poetry Challenge

Poetry Challenge Rules • Must be an original poem. • Only one poem may be entered per student. • Poems may be written in any poetic style. • The topic of the poem should be as follows: 3rd – 5th Grade “Freedom” 6th – 8th Grade “Living Free” 9th – 12th Grade “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July”? (Fredrick Douglas) • Poem must be a minimum of 3 lines, and a maximum of 40 lines. • Poems must not include “texting lingo”. All words must be spelled out. • All entries are judged anonymously, and the poet's name must not appear on the poem itself. • Include your name, parents/guardians name, and email address on a separate paper. • Send entries to aW5mbyB8IGFmcmljYW5hbWVyaWNhbmhlcml0YWdlYW5kY3VsdHVyZSAhIG9yZw== or mail to African American Heritage and Culture Center P.O. Box 1354 new Bern, NC 28563 • Entries must be received no later than May 22nd.
