Kathak duo Sohini Debnath and Debashree Bhattacharya are disciples of renowned Kathak artiste, Rani Karnaa. Both have performed with their guru at prestigious national and international events.
A top-grade solo artiste with the Doordarshan Kendra, Sohini Debnath has won numerous awards and is a recipient of the National Scholarship for Dance from the Government of India. She is empanelled with the ICCR and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Presently, Debnath is the Director of Samskritiki Shreyaskar, Rani Karnaa’s Kathak Academy in Kolkata.
Debashree Bhattacharya is an ‘A’ grade solo artiste for Kolkata Doordarshan, as well as an empannelled artiste with ICCR. She has also performed for several prestigious institutions including the Sangeet Natak Akademi, NCPA and Kathak Kendra. She heads Brindar – the learning space for Kathak and has conducted workshops all over India under SPIC MACAY and Junoon, Mumbai.
Katha Vividha is a collection of rare and choicest compositions from the repertoire of Rani Karnaa along with experimental, innovative compositions which the duo has been studying and researching for over a decade. The production forays into musical genres ranging from Hindustani, Carnatic to Tagore, folk, Western music and experimental.
Wayan Sudirana and Gomathi Boorada are curators associated with the Gamelan Yuganada, Bali and Shivamanohari Company, Canada respectively. Wayan Sudirana is among Bali’s well-known teachers and composers, performing and imparting training in Bali and internationally. After graduating from the Indonesian Arts Institute, Denpasar (where he is an Associate Professor), Sudirana studied at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where he received his MA and Ph.D.in Ethnomusicology. He was commissioned by the Canadian government to compose a piece combining Balinese gamelan, Japanese taiko and bagpipes for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Sudirana has also published a book on the future of the Balinese sacred ensemble.
Gomathi Boorada is a curator, trained Kuchipudi dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director of the Shivamanohari School of Performing Arts in Edmonton. She has worked extensively in South Asian dance-drama and theatre and is a recipient of the Cultural Diversity Award from The Edmonton Arts Council among other accolades. Boorada works with the Indonesian Institute of Arts and University of Gadjah Mada in the capacity of a guest lecturer. A trans-disciplinary artiste, she is trained in the art of Tholu Bommalata, Indian shadow puppetry and in Wayang Kulit, Javanese shadow puppetry.
Dvaita – Duality explores the existence of two sexes simultaneously yet independently called Ardhanareeswara, with Purusha (male energy) and Prakriti (female energy) together making a cosmic power. This project is a collaboration of Kuchipudi dancers from Canada and Balinese dancers from Bali who delve deep to unravel the enigma of the “coexistence of opposites”.
