NCPA’s Nrityagurukul programme endeavours to rejuvenate and sustain classical/traditional dance forms in India through the Guru-Shishya mentorship model. This programme aims to bridge the gap between training and professional performance, enhancing the skills of young dancers and supporting their journey to becoming accomplished artistes.
As part of this initiative, the NCPA will be organising a masterclass for students of dance by Bharatanatyam exponent, Rama Vaidyanathan. Assisting her would be her shishyas Priyanka Rawat, P. Vaishnavi and Laxmi.
This master class will provide technique building exercises for dancers of all disciplines, with focus on understanding the body and its response to movement dynamics. It will help dancers to create that crucial balance of stillness and movement, restrain and release, rooted yet liberated . It will also go into an in-depth exploration of Angika abhinaya and Mukha abhinaya and guide you to synergise both for effective communication.
Rama Vaidyanathan is one of the foremost Bharatanatyam dancers of her generation. She trained intensively under the legendary dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy and the celebrated Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan. In a performance career spanning four decades, Rama has developed her own individual style without forsaking the core principles of her dance form. Her technique is grounded and yet there is a fresh approach to the innumerable dance compositions that she has added to the Bharatanatyam repertoire.
She has performed at every major dance venue of India and the world, including Khajuraho Festival, Nishagandhi festival Trivandrum, Kalakshetra Festival Chennai, The National Centre for Performing Arts Mumbai, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kolkata, Bangalore Habba, The World Music Institute New York, the Smithsonian Museum Washington DC, the Tropen Theater Holland, Teatro de Fernando de Rojas Madrid, The Musee Guimet Paris, Bozar Belgium, Milap Festival Uk, IPAC Monash University Melbourne, the Esplanade Singapore, the National Centre for Arts Beijing, Teatro Juarez Mexico, National Theater Seoul, Minon Tokyo, National Museum Ottawa, and many more.
She has also been awarded with several titles and awards. The “Kalaimamani” by the Govt of Tamil Nadu and the “Kalashree” by the Govt of Kerala. Other notable awards are the Kumar Gandharv Puraskar from the Madhya Pradesh Govt, Nadanamamani from Kartik Fine Arts Chennai, Vani Kala Sudhakara from Tyagabrahma Gana sabha Chennai, Nritya Choodamani from Krishna Gana Sabha Chennai, the Nrithyakalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy. Rama is the recipient of the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar for the year 2017.
