About the event

Rhythm Roots - A tribute to Ustad Zakir Hussain

Led by tabla maestro Pandit Hindole Majumdar, this thrilling showcase blends the rhythmic languages of Hindustani and Carnatic music through five traditional instruments—tabla, mridangam, pakhawaj, shrikhol, and supported by violin.

A celebration of India’s rich percussion legacy, this is an electrifying concert led by tabla virtuoso Pandit Hindole Majumdar, bringing together the rhythmic brilliance of both Hindustani and Carnatic classical traditions. At its core is a high-octane jam featuring five iconic Indian percussion instruments—tabla, mridangam, pakhawaj, shrikhol, and ghatam—reimagining classic rhythmic frameworks such as tihai, korvai, chakradhar, and gopuchchha with exhilarating intensity.

Sharing the stage with Pandit Hindol Majumdar are some of the country’s finest rhythm keepers: Mridangam maestro Sridhar Parthasarathy, known for his unmatched command of Carnatic rhythmic phrasing; the legendary Gopal Burman, torchbearer of Bengal’s vibrant shrikhol tradition; and Sukhad Munde, one of the foremost exponents of the pakhawaj, carrying forward the sounds of ancient Indian temple music. Adding depth and earthiness is ghatam specialist Somnath Roy, whose artistry bridges Vedic roots and contemporary form. Completing the percussive ensemble is the promising young tabla player Ayushman Majumdar, bringing youthful flair and precision.

The sonic landscape is further enriched by sarangi virtuoso Farookh Latif Khan, whose emotive playing adds a melodic echo of India’s vocal traditions, and Hindustani violinist Dr. Ratish Tagde, whose lush, expressive style enhances the ensemble’s layered textures.

Together, these artists ignite a thrilling rhythmic dialogue—rooted in tradition, brimming with innovation, and pulsing with collective energy.

This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
