Join us for an introduction to the Bumble Bee Brigade, an engaging session designed to welcome new volunteers to a growing citizen-based monitoring effort in Wisconsin. The Bumble Bee Brigade partners with members of the public to conduct long-term monitoring of the state's native bumble bees - an essential step in helping conserve these critical pollinators. This event will take place on Sunday, June 29th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Waukesha County Land Conservancy’s Davis Nature Preserve in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, and will be hosted by bumble bee enthusiast Zach Kastern.
Bumble bees play a vital role in our ecosystems, but many species are experiencing alarming declines both in Wisconsin and around the world. Of the 20 species known to occur historically in Wisconsin, one is currently listed as federally endangered, seven are classified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), and an additional three are considered Species with Information Needs (SIN). Much remains unknown about their distribution, population trends, habitat preferences (especially overwintering habitats), and seasonal activity.
At this event, you’ll learn how to identify local bumble bee species, understand the importance of monitoring efforts, and gain the skills needed to contribute your own observations to a statewide conservation initiative. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, gardener, student, or simply curious, the Bumble Bee Brigade offers a meaningful way to connect with nature and make a difference. The event is weather dependent, so please register in advance to receive updates in case of a schedule change.
