Book launch of Jacinto Cuvi’s "The Edge of the Law"

L’ERIGAL vous invite chaleureusement à la présentation du nouveau livre de Jacinto Cuvi (Université libre de Bruxelles), intitulé The Edge of the Law: Street Vendors and the Erosion of Citizenship in São Paulo. À cette occasion, l’auteur donnera une conférence au cours de laquelle il présentera la recherche ayant donné lieu à l’ouvrage, approfondira ses principaux apports et répondra aux questions du public. Ce sera une excellente opportunité pour dialoguer et réfléchir collectivement aux thématiques abordées dans le livre.

La présentation se fera en anglais. Nous encourageons le public à poser des questions et à faire des commentaires en anglais, français, espagnol ou portugais, selon leur préférence.

Les petits plaisirs et commodités du quotidien auxquels tout citadin est habitué — comme une bouteille d’eau fraîche un après-midi d’été au parc, ou une glace achetée à la volée dans les embouteillages — ne sont pas gratuits pour celles et ceux qui les proposent. Avec un peu d’initiative et très peu de capital de départ, une personne débrouillarde peut vendre tout cela. Ces vendeurs et vendeuses représentent une part importante de la main-d’œuvre à São Paulo, au Brésil. Certain·es ont le droit d’exercer leur activité ; d’autres non. Tous et toutes essaient de s’en sortir — ou simplement de tenir le coup.

Dans The Edge of the Law, le sociologue Jacinto Cuvi nous plonge dans le monde des vendeurs ambulants et explore la relation entre les constructions de la légalité et l’expérience de la citoyenneté. Alors que le gouvernement met en œuvre un plan à grande échelle visant à annuler les permis de vente ambulante et à expulser les marchands de rue, Cuvi montre comment les droits des travailleurs et travailleuses informel·les sont révoqués ou refusés, et comment la frontière entre le travail « légal » et celui exercé en fuyant la police peut être redéfinie.

Au-delà des mécanismes de marginalisation, Cuvi capte l’expérience vécue de la criminalisation, en analysant la répartition (précaire) des droits entre les vendeurs et vendeuses, qui réinventent constamment des stratégies pour survivre face aux contraintes et aux pressions de cette « citoyenneté informelle » aux marges de la loi.

It will be a great opportunity for collective dialogue and reflection on the issues addressed in the book.

About the book:
The daily delights and conveniences that any city dweller has become accustomed to—such as cold water bottles on a summer afternoon in the park or a popsicle from a tray while you’re sitting in traffic—do not come cheap for those offering them. With a little initiative and very little startup money, an outgoing individual might sell you any of these things. Such vendors form a significant share of the workforce in São Paulo, Brazil. Some have the right to practice their trade; others do not. All of them strive to make it—or stay afloat.

In The Edge of the Law, sociologist Jacinto Cuvi introduces us to the world of street vendors and teases out the relationship between constructions of legality and the experience of citizenship. As the government undertakes a large-scale plan to cancel street vending licenses and evict street vendors, Cuvi reveals how the rights of informal workers are revoked or withheld, and how the lines can be redrawn between those whose work is “legal” and those who work running from the police.

Alongside the mechanics of disenfranchisement, Cuvi captures the lived experience of criminalization, dissecting the distribution of (shallow) rights among vendors as they continually reinvent strategies to etch out a living while dealing with the constraints and pressures of “informal citizenship” at the edge of the law.
