Three-Day Youth Plein Air Art Workshop at Blazing Star Stables, including National Core Arts Standards (NCAS) for Visual Arts (grades 6–12).
Plein air (pronounced “plen air”) is a French term that means “open air.” In the context of art, plein air painting refers to the act of painting outdoors, directly from the landscape or scene in front of the artist, rather than working from photographs or sketches in a studio.
Key Features of Plein Air Painting:
Artists observe natural light, color, and atmosphere in real time.
It often emphasizes quick, expressive work to capture fleeting conditions (like shifting sunlight or clouds). Artists may paint landscapes, animals, buildings, or people as they appear in the moment.
Why It’s Valuable for Students:
Builds observational skills
Encourages spontaneity and creativity
Connects students to their environment and surroundings
