Community Concerns Movie Night: Almost American

Immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States are living with uncertainty and growing danger. The Trump Administration has so far moved to strip TPS from 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians. It did so by suddenly ending TPS for some immigrants and revoking recent extensions of TPS that other groups had received in the last weeks of the Biden Administration. Turning TPS holders into "illegal immigrants" and forcing them to leave the country will upend not just their lives. It will also force many U.S. citizen children into a shattering, impossible dilemma. They will have to lose their parents to deportation or leave their homes forever in the only country they have ever known.

During his first administration, President Trump tried to revoke TPS from El Salvadorans who had been living in the United States for over 20 years. In the documentary Almost American we meet a Salvadoran-American family who have lived and worked in Washington DC legally. We will learn more about their family, why they came to the United States, the positive impact they have made in their community and the fight during Trump’s last administration to protect families with TPS from being deported.

After the movie we will hear from a member of the National TPS Alliance to get an update about what is currently being done to protect the nearly 1.5 million people who have TPS in the United States right now. In addition, we will hear about other efforts to support our migrant neighbors both here in Missoula and across the country.
