Sydney Gateway Bridges
This presentation will provide a detailed look at the design and construction of the 13 bridges delivered as part of the Sydney Gateway project—an ambitious road infrastructure initiative connecting Sydney’s motorway network with the Domestic and International Airport terminals and Port Botany.
Set within a tightly constrained brownfield environment, the project team overcame numerous technical and logistical challenges, including heritage canal crossings, critical utility interfaces, contaminated land, and Sydney Airport’s Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS).
Attendees will gain insights into a wide range of structural forms and construction methodologies adopted across the project, from the world-first incrementally launched twin network arch bridges over Alexandra Canal, to long-span steel box girders installed via Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT), to complex viaducts using Super-T and composite steel spans.
The presentation will explore how these bridges were designed to navigate tight spatial envelopes, high skew geometries, and dynamic loading conditions, and will highlight the use of bespoke temporary works, digital planning tools, and innovative launching equipment to safely deliver the structures in an active transport corridor.
Event speaker - Daniel Fryirs
