As part of the Catalyst for Change series, join us for a compelling fireside chat with Art Gilliam, President and CEO of WLOK Radio, whose groundbreaking leadership helped redefine the landscape of Southern media and Black-owned broadcasting. A true pioneer, Gilliam was the first African American columnist at The Commercial Appeal and the first Black television anchor in Memphis, before making history again by founding WLOK as the city’s first Black-owned and locally owned radio station.
Through candid storytelling, Gilliam will reflect on his journey from Yale University to national recognition in broadcasting, his work in public service, and the creation of platforms that elevated gospel music, civic awareness, and community pride. Under his leadership, WLOK has become a national model of faith-based programming and cultural celebration, including the beloved Stone Soul Picnic.
Celebrate a legacy of resilience, innovation, and purpose with a man who continues to inspire future generations to use media as a force for justice and change.
Following the fireside chat, we will host a reception.
