Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) meet on a train journey across Europe before spending one evening together wandering the streets of Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together...

Nine years after Jesse and Celine first met, they encounter each other once more on the French leg of Jesse's book tour.
