About the event

A4FC Rematriation of Art & Natural Color
​A4FC Rematriation of Art is a multi-series program on rematriation to land + water of Felix Cove Tamal-Liwa through relation to plants and natural pigments of Felix Cove. In this workshop series participants will collaborate together by working with Indigenous identified & multi-cultural artists to explore plant pigments of Felix Cove Tomales Bay, natural dye applications, illustration, painting techniques and storytelling through graphic art. Participants will have a chance to learn about plants, natural pigment making and to create art inspired by connection to Coast Miwok land.

​Workshops will be led by Indigenous & multi-cultural identified artists Renee Ring Castro (Ohlone) & Elissa Callen (Mexican-American) w/ guest presenter Jaclyn Fawn Mendez (Yurok, Wašiw, Surigaonon).

​This is a multi-series workshop. Participants are asked to be available for July 2nd online meeting, July 5th in person visit to Felix Cove and one or both of the in person art making days of July 13th & 20th. Native/Indigenous & BIPOC identified people are encouraged to sign up!

​WORKSHOP DATES:

​July 2nd 6:00pm - 7:30pm (online) - From Concept To A Full On Relationship w/ Art by graphic artist Jaclyn Fawn Mendez of RezDayze + Community Artist Meet Up

​In this online presentation, Jackie Fawn will present an overview of her collaborative workflow, her creative process, range and the power of art. Jackie will host a discussion with workshop participants about their relationship to art - "Introducing Babe to the family."

​July 5th 10:00am - 4:00pm - (In Person) Felix Cove Natural Pigment Plant Walk w/ Elissa Callen + Theresa Harlan - Tomales Bay, CA

​Participants will be led by Elissa, horticulturalist & natural pigment artist, on a plant walk to Felix Cove, Tamal Liwa. We will identify both local native plants & invasive plants and their uses in color and dye. In this gathering Theresa Harlan will also share the story of her Coast Miwok Felix family. An art activity will be facilitated by Renee Ring.

​July 13th 10:00am - 4:00pm (In Person) Stories of Past and Present: Plant Colorants of Tamal-liwa, Tomales Bay w/ Elissa - Fibershed Learning Center Point Reyes, CA

​Attendees will learn the process of natural dyeing step-by-step, and take home their own plant-dyed textile goods created together in class. We will also touch on the process of making natural tannin-based ink and, if time permits, make our own.

​July 20th 10:00am - 4:00pm (In Person) Painting w/ Natural Pigments w/ Renee - Fibershed Learning Center Point Reyes, CA

​In this workshop we will continue to explore natural pigments with fine art illustration & painting techniques. Participants will be given an opportunity to explore these techniques in plant illustrations and guache painting.

​WHAT TO EXPECT:

​July 2nd In this online workshop w/ Jackie Fawn. Artists/workshop participants will have a chance to explore their relationship with art.

​July 12th Visit to Felix Cove - Please come prepared dressed in layers for cold and warm weather. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk 1 mile up and down hill to Felix Cove. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

​July 13th & 20th In person workshops at Fibershed Learning Center, Point Reyes, CA - Please come dressed in work/art clothes that can get dirty/stained by plant pigments or bring an apron to wear. Lunch will be provided on both days.

​ARTIST BIOS:

​Renee Ring Castro - Renee Ring is an Objects Conservation Intern at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco and an Indigenous artist from the Lisjan band of the Ohlone Tribe. Originally from Oakland, California, she is deeply committed to preserving cultural material to become a professional objects conservator. Her practice bridges the worlds of art and conservation with a focus on Indigenous knowledge, material culture, and community-based stewardship. @ladyreniart

​Elissa Callen - Elissa Callen is a Mexican American ecological artist using natural pigments made from invasive plant species and wild fungi to observe alternative ways humans can closely attune to and engage with our environments. Her research is rooted in California ecology, anthropogenic environmental influences, and the impact invasive species have on native biodiversity. Influenced by the experiences of her biracial identity, she believes intersections can bridge disparate gaps between academia and the general public. She hopes to generate an increased culture of community interest in environmentalism, conservation, and connectedness to the native landscape through her work with sustainable natural materials @slateandrust

​Jackie Fawn Mendez - Jackie Fawn is a Yurok/Washoe/Surigoanon graphic illustrator whose art uplifts Indigenous, environmental and social issues through her visuals of modern day warrior babes. @jackiefawn
