Over 100 years ago, Willa and Charles Bruce built a thriving Black-owned beach resort right here in Manhattan Beach—an act of vision, joy, and resilience. Today, the City honors their legacy through a series of Juneteenth events that reflect on our past, celebrate community, and inspire the future.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. This day came to be known as #Juneteenth, now officially a federal holiday.
What to Expect:
The Juneteenth Ceremony will feature special remarks by Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, along with Mayor Amy Thomas Howorth, speakers and poets from the Mira Costa Black Students Union.
Everyone is welcome:
The Juneteenth Ceremony is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their families and friends to honor African American culture, reflect on our past, celebrate community, and inspire the future.
Parking:
Parking is VERY limited around Bruce's Beach. General parking will be available at the Grand View Elementary parking lot located at 24th Street and Vista Drive in Manhattan Beach.
Rideshare Zone: there will be a rideshare/taxi pick-up and drop-off area on the northwest corner of Highland Avenue and 27th Street.
