"The Rainbowfishes of the Queensland Wet Tropics"
Keith and Susan are retired Environmental Scientists who have lived in Cairns for 30 years, both with a lifelong interest in all
aspects of natural history. Over the last 15 years or so, they have spent much of their spare time researching and systematically
exploring this region for rainbowfishes. Collected specimens were live photographed, and samples sent for genetics and
taxonomic research. The project is a collaboration between the Northern Territory Museum and University of Canberra (where
Keith is a volunteer research associate). The study aims to clarify the distribution and taxonomy of the Wet Tropics
rainbowfishes, and to raise awareness of the conservation issues facing this group.
The Wet Tropics region is the richest area in Australia for rainbowfish diversity. The presentation will summarise the main
findings of the studies and will showcase aquarium and in-situ photos of most of the rainbowfish varieties found in the region
and the environments where they live.
