The Western Illinois Museum welcomes singer and storyteller Average Joey for an intimate performance on Tuesday, June 24, beginning at 6:30 PM, followed by a second set at 7:30 PM. As entertaining as he is honest—and as self-aware as he is philosophical—Average Joey blends musical performance, spoken word poetry, and a cappella group singing to engage audiences with a rich array of instrumental sounds and expressive storytelling. He will be joined by local legend and fiddler John Lane.
Doors and bar open at 6 PM. A $5 suggested donation will be collected at the door.
Average Joey is a songwriter, poet, author, community organizer, and student of social work. Originally from Pennsylvania, he spent many years in Pittsburgh organizing within the DIY music scene and touring with various punk and folk groups. His musical journey has taken him across the U.S. countless times, as well as to stages in Canada and Europe.
With a focus on lyricism, Joey’s songs combine the vulnerability of personal reflection with the urgency of political commentary. His work is marked by dark humor, blunt honesty, and image-driven wordplay. Joey does not shy away from addressing systemic struggles, but he tells these stories in a way that is both accessible and deeply human.
An Average Joey performance invites us to laugh at the absurdities of our times while challenging us to envision—and begin building—a better world together. Don’t miss this timely and powerful evening at your local museum.
